CBS Early Show Highlights Everett Aviation Student
Samuel Warby of Everett's Aviation Maintenance Technician Program shares why specific skills training is important on national news program
By Jennifer Ferrero
Sam Warby is a local celebrity. He appeared on a report with CBS News on July 8, 2011 that highlighted the importance of career-based skills training like that offered at Everett Community College in the Aviation Maintenance Technician Program.
As a student in the two-year certificate program, Warby is on the move. At only 20 years old, he has his career planned out and has already been hired by Boeing.
Graduating from Claudia Taylor Johnson High School in San Antonio, TX, Warby went into an FAA Mechanics school in Texas right after high school. He then held an internship at Randolph Air Force Base.
When his family moved to the Everett area for jobs, Warby took the summer off and enrolled in the program at Everett Community College.
"Aviation is a career field where you are always learning. It's hard to get bored when you are changing a tire on an airplane one day and taking apart the engine on another day," Warby shares.
With reports that Boeing is looking to hire 3,500-5,000 skilled workers in the coming years, it looks like Warby has landed in a career with potential.
While Everett is proud that Warby spoke for the program on national television, Warby was proud to be interviewed. "It felt good. It was the first time that I was on national TV," he adds.
Mary Kaye Bredeson, director for the Center of Excellence reflects on comments made by Harvard University in the CBS piece, "I was pleased to see that Harvard University realizes that not every high school student is geared for a four year degree. The community colleges are answering the call for a technical skills workforce with 49% of job openings requiring technical skills - not a four-year degree."
What's next for Warby? He starts with Boeing next month and hopes to start on his degree in Aerospace Engineering while employed at Boeing.
